Fanny Alofs is a singer/songwriter with a wide span of musical abilities. She is a skilful improviser, articulate in many languages, using her great range and lithe voice in various fields of music, including modern jazz and contemporary classical music. Her talents have been recognized by many outstanding names in the field. In 2002, Fanny was selected –based on her vocal improvisation talents - to perform in a masterclass with New York Voices. She also won an exclusive workshop with vocalist Dianne Reeves resulting in a performance at Carnegie Hall (New York City) in 2006.
In contemporary classical music, she has worked as a soloist with conductors Reinbert de Leeuw and Jaap van Zweden and with composer Steve Reich. She took part in the YO!festival, Utrecht, in 2005 and performed in the KORZO musical theatre production Sottenschip, by Anke Brouwer and Boukje Schweigman in 2006. Currently, she is singing and acting in various musical theatre productions throughout the Netherlands.
Fanny Alofs is a gifted lyricist and songwriter, fusing elements of folk, theatre songs and modern jazz into her pieces. In partnership with jazz composer Jelke Smit, Fanny recently wrote a 13-minute opera for the Leiden-based festival Made in Leiden. Alofs and Smit are working on a staged song programme, which will premiere next year.
In 2004, her a cappella quintet On Air won various prizes at national and international festivals, among which are the 1st prize Focus Festival, 2nd prize at the International Vocal Group Festival, qualifying the group as the best Dutch participant. Fanny Alofs earned a Bachelor Degree with Distinction in Jazz Singing from the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague, studying under Anette von Eichel. She is pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, studying with Lydia van Dam.
